Van Williams, the actor best known for portraying the Green Hornet in his eponymous 60s TV show, has passed away at the age of 82.
Williams played Britt Reid and his alter ego the Green Hornet for one season in 1966, acting alongside Bruce Lee who played Green Hornet's sidekick Kato. The show even crossed over with 1966's other major superhero show, Batman, teaming the Green Hornet and Kato with the Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin. Unlike Batman, however, Green Hornet was an attempt at a more serious superhero show.
After The Green Hornet, Williams acted on television for another decade before becoming an actual hero by serving as a reserve sheriff's deputy and volunteer firefighter in Los Angeles.
“He had a wonderful, caring, and kind heart,” Vicki Williams, his wife since 1959, told Variety. “He was a wonderful husband, he was a fabulous father, and a devoted grandfather.”
