The first three cast members of Star Trek: Discovery have been officially announced.
First up is Doug Jones, a veteran actor known for his work in prosthetics, who will play Lieutenant Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer, and a member of a previously unseen alien race. Jones is best known for his role as Abe Sapien in both Hellboy films, as well as the physical performance of Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Joining Jones is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actress Michelle Yeoh, who will play Captain Georgiou of the U.S.S. Shenzou. Yeoh's casting was previously rumored, though has only now been confirmed by CBS.
Finally, Anthony Rapp, best known for his work on Broadway as part of Rent, will play Lieutenant Stamets, a Science Officer on the U.S.S. Discovery who specializes in the study of extraterrestrial fungus. Stamets is also the first official gay character in a Star Trek TV series.
Star Trek: Discovery will debut on CBS Access in May 2017.
