BE MY VALENTINE1 of 122017 intensifies for Marvel in February, with several titles on the cusp of big changes.
Steve Rogers's Hydra secret may be in danger, the conflict between the Inhumans and X-Men is getting serious, and long-dormant villains may be breaking bad again.
Newsarama went through the Marvel February 2017 solicitations and picked out some of the most important things you need to know before the new year hits.
WEIRDWORLD2 of 12The alternate dimension of Weirdworld was a big deal for Marvel in the wake of Secret Wars, with its own ongoing series and a Black Knight series that took place in the fabled world. Several titles also crossed into the dimension. But the two ongoing series didn't last long, and Weirdworld faded back into obscurity.
Until February, that is. In Spider-Man/Deadpool #14, Pete and Wade will venture into the land of magical weirdness for an adventure that couldn't possibly turn out well for anyone involved.
WHICH IS WHICH3 of 12Several Marvel covers in February seem to have double vision.
For example, All-New X-Men #18 pits the teenage Cyclops against his older counterpart - at least in spirit - though the cover makes the clash a bit more literal.
On top of that, the cover for Amazing Spider-Man #24 shows the new, red-suited Jackal wrestling with his green, furry old school doppelganger. More clones? Signs point to "yes."
MISSING & MULTIPLE4 of 12Two ongoing Marvel titles are skipping out on February - Silver Surfer and Squadron Supreme are missing from the schedule - with Marvel declining to comment to Newsarama on whether these titles were cancelled, or simply taking a skip month.
On the other hand, a few titles appear to be shipping twice in February. Deadpool, Captain America: Steve Rogers, IvX, and Old Man Logan all scheduled to hit shelves twice in February.
DIRECTOR OF S.H.I.E.L.D.5 of 12As if enough wasn't going on in Steve Rogers's life, now it looks like his tenuous ally Maria Hill is out as director of S.H.I.E.L.D. as of Captain America: Steve Rogers #12, after a court martial for unspecified reasons - with someone else to take her place.
On top of that, in Steve Rogers #13, the returned Baron Zemo has apparently reformulated the Masters of Evil yet again.
NEW GODS6 of 12Thor is no stranger to meeting the gods of other patheons - the Greeks, the Egyptians, even some Japanese deities have all crossed mighty Mjolnir's path. But now Thor will have to contend with some very different deities - the Gods of the Shi'Ar in Mighty Thor #16.
As part of the war between Asgard and the Shi'Ar empire, Thor will go be placed into games held by the Shi'Ar gods with the fate of Midgard at stake.
UNWORTHY WARDROBE7 of 12After running around without a shirt for a couple of years now, Odinson has finally decided to get some new clothes, including a fetching red cloak and some chain mail armor in Unworthy Thor #4 (looking somewhat like the 2015 Red Sonja redesign)- an issue that will also bring him into conflict with Thanos's Black Legion.
Meanwhile, over in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #17, Doreen Green is getting some new duds of her own - a Flying Squirrel suit that will allow Marvel's mightiest warrior to take to the skies.
TURNCOAT8 of 12The conflict between the Inhumans and mutants races towards its conclusion with two issues of IvX shipping in February - and it looks like the crossover has a few surprises in store before ResurrXion relaunches the Inhumans and X-Men lines.
The solicit for Inhumans Vs. X-Men #4 says that one mutant will turn on his kind, joining forces with the Inhumans. Hank McCoy has been running with the Inhumans since after Secret Wars, but this seems less like a strategic partnership and more of a betrayal.
NICK FURY, SR.9 of 12Hot on the heels of his appearance as The Unseen in Unworthy Thor #1, Nick Fury, Sr. will apparently be back in Occupy Avengers #4 - but is it really him?
That sure looks like him on the cover, but the solicit says he's out to kill Clint Barton's squad - and the solicit even begins to throw shade on the authenticity of this Fury. Doesn't exactly sound like something Fury would do - even on his worst day.
WHITE QUEEN10 of 12This variant cover for All-New X-Men #18 paints quite a picture of the fate of Cyclops in Death of X. Like Cyclops, Emma Frost hasn't been seen since Secret Wars - but could there be a more sinister reason for that?
What are the chances some of Emma's villainous tendencies returned and maybe even led her to psychically manipulate Cyclops into attacking the Inhumans? With ResurrXion launching a new Generation X title, there may be big plans in store for the former White Queen.
SECRET'S OUT?11 of 12Steve Rogers has been evil for the better part of a year, and he hasn't even come close to having his secret spill - that is, until February.
The solicit for Deadpool #27strongly implies that good ol' Wade Wilson may be on the trail of Steve's Hydra secret - but from the looks of that cover, he may not even mind too much.
After all, one of Deadpool's best pals is Bob, Agent of Hydra.
