Update May 23, 2017: Variety reported Tuesday evening director Doug Liman has left Warner Bros.’ Dark Universe, - a.k.a. 'Justice League Dark' - over scheduling issues.

Liman is attached to direct Lionsgate’s Chaos Walking, which was recently green lit.

Variety’s sources say the studio – who had no comment on the story – “has already started meeting with other directors and should have a replacement for Liman lined up shortly.”

Dark Universe, in a screenplay by Michal Grillo, reportedly revolves around a DC team of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon and would play a major role in the new DC. Cinematic Expanded Universe.

Original story: Now that director Doug Liman has the reins of Dark Universe, the long in-development Justice League Dark movie, he's setting a high bar for what the film can accomplish.

"First of all, I love those characters, and I love Warner Bros., and I love [producer] Scott Rudin, and it’s - and you know, I get asked to come in and do things that are 'unconventional.' If people want conventional, they don’t come to me," Liman told IGN. "And so you know when Warner Bros. wants to sort of turn the comic book genre on its head, they call me."

"It’s like how do you fundamentally reinvent what people are doing? And that’s the good and the bad news of this sort of box I’ve been put in. I mean, you’d think it was by design, but it wasn’t...So even if I wanted to be a little bit more conventional, like, the system doesn’t want me to be."
No release date for Dark Universe has been set.
