The Dominators have been revealed as the central antagonist of the CW's four-way fall crossover between its DC superhero shows Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Originally created in 1967 by Jim Shooter and Jim Mooney for Adventure Comics, the Dominators are a group from the alien empire known as the Dominion. Introduced as antagonists for the future team Legion of Superheroes, DC made them the key villains in the 1989 event title Invasion! In that storyline, the Dominators' motives are to abduct metahumans to experiment on them and discover how to create an army of them.

"This year, for our mega ‘Arrowverse’ crossover, we’re taking inspiration from a DC crossover from the late 1980s known as Invasion!, which featured an alien race called the Dominators, who’d previously vexed the Legion of Super-Heroes,” said Marc Guggenheim, executive producer of both Arrow and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. “We’re using cutting edge prosthetics and computer effects to achieve a feature film-quality look which is faithful to Invasion! artist Todd McFarlane’s interpretation of the characters.”

Arrow leading man Stephen Amell recently posted this set photo standing next to Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), in costume no less, staring into the sky. Perhaps this is an early pre-CG shot of the Dominators descending on Earth?

Interestingly, this is the second time this week plans to revive early work from the career of Todd McFarlane has been revealed. On Tuesday, Marvel Comics announced it was turning an interior McFarlane image of Venom from a 1988 issue of Amazing Spider-Man into a new variant cover.
