Spoilers ahead for this week's Civil War II #5.
Civil War II #5 marks the first real knockdown, dragout throwdown between Captain Marvel and Iron Man’s respective crews in the ongoing event, but its what happens in the end - and outside of it - which might be its most memorable moments.
Kicking off Civil War #5, The Illuminati assembles against Carol Danvers after seeing Tony Stark's findings about Ulysses in Civil War II #4. Carol calls on the Ultimates and Guardians of the Galaxy for back up, and what follows is the conflict between the two Avengers (and their groups) writ large, and spelled out between back and forth blows. Even the X-Men join the fray – on both sides no less.
The fighting culminates in Civil War II #5’s biggest moment – a new vision from Ulysses that predicts the death of Steve Rogers … apparently at the hands of Miles Morales. Crushed, Miles insists that the scene played out in Ulysses’ vision could never happen, but Carol moves to place him under arrest regardless.
A potential conflict between Miles and Steve has been foreshadowed for some time, with the solicited cover of Civil War II #6 essentially mirroring the vision seen in this issue.
Given that Miles is featured as a big part of the upcoming Champions title's marketing, it's pretty clear that he will wind up going free (whether he’s in some way exonerated, or a fugitive from the law). How he gets there - and how this specific incident leads to the formation of the new team of youthful heroes – remains to be seen.
Civil War II #5 is on stands now, with Civil War II #6 currently scheduled for October 26.
