NOTHING LASTS FOREVER1 of 12November is a big month for Marvel, with more 'Marvel NOW!' relaunches, returning characters, and continuing sagas for its biggest names.
Marvel released its November solicitations this week, so you know what that means - time for Newsarama to dig and uncover all the hidden details about what's coming up.
Deaths? We got 'em. Surprise returns? We got 'em. New costumes? You betcha.
Here's what we learned from Marvel's November 2016 solicitations.
MAN IN THE IRON (MAN) MASK2 of 12We’ve known for some time that Victor Von Doom would be one of two heroes filling in as Iron Man (or an Iron-hero) while Tony Stark is on sabbatical from the role later this year, but until now, we hadn’t really caught a glimpse of what Doctor Doom would look like as the Infamous Iron Man.
The cover of Infamous Iron Man #2 finally shows off Doom’s new armor, complete with his trademark green cloak.
But that begs the question… If this is Doom’s armor, and Tony’s out of the picture, who’s in the Iron Man armor on the the variant cover of Avengers #1?
EX-MEN3 of 12It’s no secret that the Death of X mini-series would contain some tragedy – it’s right there in the title, after all. But until now it wasn’t spelled out whether only the tale of the late, great Cyclops’s death would be recounted in the story.
The solicit for Death of X #4 mentions that Cyke isn’t the only one who “doesn’t make it out alive.” Could this mean the demise of an Inhuman or two? Or will the absent Emma Frost, Scott’s lover and partner in crime, also kick the bucket?
Then, in Uncanny X-Men #15, the disagreement between Psylocke and Magneto may turn deadly, as the solicit says Magneto considers Psylocke an "acceptable sacrifice" in pursuit of his mission.
BACK IN ACTION4 of 12November may begin the 'death' of the year, but it's bringing back several Marvel mainstays who have been gone for some time.
First up, All-New X-Men Annual #1 brings back Dani Moonstar from disuse, while Uncanny X-Men Annual #1 returns Elixir from the literal dead.
Then, over in Silk #14, Mattie Franklin is back from the dead. Likewise, Uncanny Avengers #16 confirms that Hulk is already risen - though it's through the power of The Hand.
NEW & RETURNING CREATORS5 of 12We already knew Penn Jillette would be authoring Spider-Man/Deadpool #11 in January, but there are several other big names joining (or rejoining) the Marvel creative staff that we're just learning about now.
First up, comedian Wayne Brady will make his comic book writing debut penning a story for Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1.
Then, artists Kevin Maguire and Steve Epting are back in the Marvel stable, with Maguire illustrating Guardians of the Galaxy #14, and Epting stepping in on Mighty Thor.
Finally, animator Genndy Tartakovsky's long awaited Cage! mini-series gets a variant cover from his fellow animator, Bruce Timm.
MARVEL MYSTERY THEATER6 of 12The return of Jessica Jones as a leading lady is hardly surprising, given her hit Netflix show. What is surprising is how central her new title may wind up being in "Marvel NOW!." The solicit for Jessica Jones #2 calls her new case “one of the biggest mysteries” of the new Marvel Universe.
It also says the issue will answer some of the biggest questions of Marvel NOW! – the only trouble is, we don’t even know what those questions will be just yet.
But given its written by Marvel's defacto showrunner Brian Michael Bendis, he'd be the one to know those questions AND be able to tell those answers.
THE QUEST FOR THE HAMMER7 of 12A second Thor series - The Unworthy Thor - was announced some time ago, and we’ve known it will focus on Odinson, the former wielder of Mjolnir, since it was announced. But what’s news is that it was announced as an ongoing series, while the solicit for the first issue calls it a mini-series.
Was it cut down? Or was it a miscommunication in the original announcement? It’s not uncommon for these kind of plans to change. One thing is certain, whether The Unworthy Thor is ongoing or not, it’s solicited as the beginning of “The Quest for the Hammer.”
He might need it, with that whole movie coming up in 2017.
REUNIONS LIKE LIGHTNING8 of 12The Thunderbolts are sure to be at the center of the Marvel Universe in coming months with Kobik and Bucky being major parts of the ongoing saga of Steve Rogers. But it looks like they'll be regaining a central part of their team in November as well.
Though Bucky may be in trouble in Thunderbolts #7, the issue also marks the return of Songbird to the fold - though it's unclear whether she'll be on board with her old teammates getting back together.
ULTIMATE QUESTIONS9 of 12A new volume of The Ultimates launches in November, and the solicitation and cover for #1 carry some interesting mysteries.
First off, who's the Cosmic Jailer? And, if they're powerful enough to jail Eternity, how have we never heard of them?
And second, who's that mysterious silhouetted figure in the background of the cover? It sorta resembles Proxima Midnight, one of Thanos's henchmen from Infinity, although the logo would be new and more reminiscent of Shi'ar's Gladiator... with a weird hat?
DEADLY FOES10 of 12Several Spider-Man villains are back in action in November, starting with Venom in his all-new ongoing series. This looks to be the classic Venom, though the solicitation for Venom #1 says he's "not a lethal protector, not a Space Knight," but rather an "all new Venom." Could the symbiote have a new host?
Meanwhile, over in Spider-Woman #13, Hobgoblin is back, but it may not be Roderick Kingsley under the mask.
Finally, in Amazing Spider-Man #21, both Kaine and Carrion - two failed clones of Peter Parker - are back, no doubt as part of The Clone Conspiracy.
DETECT SECRET DOORS11 of 12Steve Rogers has his fair share of secrets - being a hidden Hydra Agent being probably the biggest - but the solicitations for Captain America: Steve Rogers #7 says he's about to uncover a secret even bigger than the one he's hiding.
This supposed secret is found when Steve "opens a door," but is that literal - or figurative? This is one secret wrapped in a mystery stuffed in an enigma.
It took years for Bendis to reveal what was behind the Cabal's door in "Dark Reign"; hopefully we'll get answers sooner than that in this case.
