Updated August 19, 2016: Alcon Entertainment has confirmed that Suicide Squad's Jared Leto has joined the cast of its upcoming Blade Runner sequel. Producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson say Leto's role is under wraps, but says it will be a new "memorable" character.

“We are thrilled that Jared has agreed to play a key role in the Blade Runneer sequel," said Kosove and Johnson in a joint statement. "He is a phenomenal actor, and we know he will create a truly memorable, never before seen character.”

Original Story: Jared Leto has been cast for an unspecified role in the upcoming Blade Runner sequel, according to Variety.

If accurate, Leto would join a cast which includes Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, and the returning Harrison Ford. The film is being directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Villeneuve began filming the movie last month in Budapest.

The as-yet-untitled Blade Runner sequel is scheduled to be released in theaters October 6, 2017.
