Brie Larson is confirmed as playing Carol Danver in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, but her origin will be a bit different than what it was in comic books according to screenwriter Nicole Perlman. Perlman, who also wrote the original script for Guardians of the Galaxy, said that they're changing the one-time Ms. Marvel to avoid confusion with DC's Green Lantern.
"Here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do," Perlman said on the Any Time With Vin Forte podcast. "There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film."
Although it might seem odd, one perspective on it does give it more than just a little bit of commonality: A hot shot American pilot meets an alien hero, and after his death take up his title and powers as a protector of Earth, sometimes teaming up with a larger corps. of like-minded heroes.
Having a somewhat similar origin to Green Lantern isn't the only slight similarity between Captain Marvel and a DC hero. Cap's real name is Carol Danvers, not too far off from Kara Danvers, the sometime secret identity of Supergirl.
Still, Perlman is keenly aware of the importance of Marvel Studios's first headlining female superhero - and also offered some clues as to which direction the film could take.
"I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently."
No mention is made on if the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, would be excised from Danvers' origin as well.
Captain Marvel is due out in theaters March 8, 2019.
