After just recently confirming that Hail Caesar! actor Alden Ehrenreich would be taking the role of a young Han Solo for solo film, Disney is now reportedly looking to expand it into a trilogy.
According to the New York Daily News, a source close to the production says that if the film performs well, it could turn into a series of its own. This isn't exactly odd - many studios look at genre films as doors to a potential franchise play. But up until now, it was implied that the Star Wars anthology films - of which Han Solo was presumably one, like the upcoming Rogue One - were intended as one-offs.
“There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential,” the anonymous source explained. “Given that Han’s early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new characters. They feel that his character has the right potential to become a central figure in several movies. They’re keeping things under wraps at the moment, but the deal is that he has signed for at least three movies.”
Whether Han Solo is intended as a series of solo films or not, signing Ehrenreich to a multi-picture deal would also be par for the course.
The untitled Han Solo film is scheduled for a May 25, 2018 release.
