Spanish actor Javier Bardem is in talks for the title role in Universal Pictures' upcoming Frankenstein reboot, according to Variety. The Hollywood trade describes the role as "Frankenstein" itself, so it is unknown if the role is Dr. Frankeinstein or Frankenstein's Monster.
This Frankenstein film would be part of Universal's planned interconnected cinematic universe of monster films alongside Tom Cruise's The Mummy, Johnny Depp's The Invisible Man, as well as Bride of Frankstein.
The Mummy, which is directed by Alex Kurtzman, is currently being filmed in the United Kingdom. The Hollywood trade couldn't rule out whether Bardem could appear in that film as Frankenstein before a standalone film of his own - and interestingly, Bardem had already turned down the role of Dr. Jekyll in The Mummy, leading Russell Crowe to take the part.
The Mummy is scheduled for release June 9, 2017.
No release date has been given for Frankenstein.
