The 40th anniversary of Fantagraphics will be celebrated at this year’s Small Press Expo (SPX) with special guests, lectures, panels, and a commemorative booklet. Founded in 1976 by Gary Groth and Michael Catron, Fantagraphics has grown to become one of the bastions of independent comic books, as well as publishing the long-running The Comics Journal.

Groth will give a lecture at the Library of Congress on September 17, with SPX having a dedicated track of panels September 17 and 18 highlighting several of the publisher’s titles and creators. The convention will also be handing out an exclusive Fantagraphics newsprint commemorative booklet on convention weekend. Creators scheduled to attend include Joe Sacco, Trina Robbins, Daniel Clowes, the Hernandez Brothers, Carol Tyler, Jim Woodring, Drew Friedman, and Ed Piskor.

SPX is scheduled to be held September 17 and 18 at Maryland’s Marriott North Bethesda Hotel & Conference Center.
