Japanese actress Kaori Momoi has been cast in Ghost in the Shell as the mother of Scarlett Johansson's character, According to the Associated Press.
In the original Ghost in the Shell manga and subsequent anime films and series, Johansson's character's mother doesn't appear, though reference is made to an accident in her childhood that led to her consciousness being implanted in an artificial body. If the report is accurate, it's unclear in what context Momoi's character would appear.
Momoi did address the allegations of white-washing in the film - casting a white actor as a character originally portrayed as non-white - saying "I felt blessed to have worked with [Scarlett Johansson]...And so what's fantastic is fantastic. What fails just fails."
Meanwhile, several members of Production I.G., the company that produced the anime Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, visited the set of the film, tweeting their thanks to the cast and crew.
