When Matt Smith moves into the TARDIS next year, he’ll be joined by the Scottish Karen Gillan, a 21 year-old little known actor who’s been seen as a Soothsayer in “The Fires of Pompeii” in Season Four – this according to the BBC.
"I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. - I just can't wait to get started," Gillan is quoted as saying. “The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him.”There had been speculation as to who the new companion would be, given that the new Doctor, Smith is 26 years old – the youngest ever cast in the role. Some fans had guessed that the older-than-Smith Sally Sparrow, who appeared in the Third Season episode “Blink” (written new showrunner by Steven Moffat) would be cast, continuing the “make an appearance, get the job” method of becoming the Companion as seen with Season Four’s Donna Noble.
According to the report, Gillan’s audition with Smith locked her into the role.
"A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too," Moffat said.
Gillan has previously appeared in Stacked, The Kevin Bishop Show in the U.K., and the upcoming film Outcast. Her role as the Doctor’s Companion will be her highest profile role to date.
