J. Michael Straczynski's creator-owned superhero series Rising Stars is headed to the big screen courtesy of MGM, according to Deadline. JMS, who recently co-wrote the Netflix series Sense8, will be writing the Rising Stars screenplay. Atlas Entertainment's Alex Gartner and Richard Suckle will act as producers.
Launched in 1999 under his Joe's Comics imprint for Image/Top Cow, Rising Stars followed a group of people who were born with superpowers and connected by one single event.
A Rising Stars movie has been in development before, with Straczynski and Top Cow having a public disagreement in 2003 after over a prospective movie deal and the writer not being included in those negotations. Because of that, JMS halted work on the series after Rising Stars #21. Top Cow and JMS ultimately came to a deal, with the final three issues shipping almost two years later.
No director or projected release date were revealed for this new Rising Stars film project.
