One of the biggest surprises of DC Universe: Rebirth #1 was the full-fledged debut of Dr. Manhattan and other elements of Watchmen into the main DC Universe - but according to co-creator Dave Gibbons, he didn't know of the plans beforehand.
During an interview at MCM Comic Con this past weekend, Gibbons rebuffed most questions about the event, saying "I wouldn’t make the question too long as all I’ve going to say is no comment.” Follow-up questions by an unidentified reporter led the artist to say "No, they didn't" contact him but "that's all I'm going to say."

Both Gibbons and Watchmen co-creator Alan Moore declined to comment to Newsarama about DC Universe: Rebirth #1.
In the past, Gibbons has consulted with DC (and its parent company Warner Bros.) on Watchmen-related projects, including the 2009 movie and the 2012 Before Watchmen prequels. In October 2015, HBO confirmed that Warner Bros. is currently developing a Watchmen television series.
The artist continues to work with DC however, contributing a variant cover to Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 earlier this year.
