This weekend, famed director Steven Spielberg gave Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn "the greatest compliment of his life" when he praised Guardians as his favorite superhero movie.
"I really like Richard Donner's Superman, [Christopher] Nolan's Dark Knight, and the first Iron Man," Spielberg told Italian entertainment site Omelete at the Cannes Film Festival. "But the superhero movie that most impressed me was Guardians of the Galaxy. When it ended, I left the cinema with the feeling I had just experienced something new, free of cynicism and without concern for being gritty when necessary."
Gunn responded to the comments on Facebook, saying "I learned what a director was because as a kid I loved Raiders of the Ark so much I wondered who the guy was behind it all, and I'm making movies today because of it." On Twitter, he added "I'm teary-eyed right now. No one has influenced Guardians more."
Spielberg famously sparked a conversation about the onset of "superhero movie fatigue" last year, claiming the trend was heading for "an implosion."
Gunn is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is due out in theaters May 5, 2017.
