Longtime Hollywood producers Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum have optioned Mark Millar and Stuart Immonen's Empress for a movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. XXX: The Return of Xander Cage screenwriter F. Scott Frazier is reportely working on the screenplay.
“In terms of pure concept, this is the most ambitious story I’ve ever come up with so it needed the most experienced producers I’ve ever been in business with," said Millar. "Joe Roth is a genuine Hollywood legend and Jeff Kirschenbaum was part of the team that broke every record in the book at Universal last year. Even being on the same poster as these two guys is exciting to me.”
Kirschenbaum was one of the producers of Millar's first movie, Wanted.
"Nobody creates universes that translate into big movie ideas better than Millar,” said Kirschenbaum. “With Empress he's raised the bar yet again. Part Star Wars, part Guardians of the Galaxy and part something wholly fresh that only the amazing brain of Millar could spawn."
Empress #1 was published in April by Marvel's Icon imprint, with the second issue due out on Wednesday.
This movie option is the latest in a string of movie developments for Millar's various creator-owned tites after the optioning of Supercrooks and American Jesus on Monday. A sequel to The Kingsman: Secret Service is currently filming in London, and options were previously announced for Huck, Chrononauts and Starlight.
