Casting for James Cameron's long-gestating live-action adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel is underway, with several actress in contention for the role according to The Hollywood Reporter. The three actresses named are Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Maika Monroe (Independence Day: Resurgence), and Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials). According to the Hollywood trade's unnamed sources, Zendaya 'could be the frontrunner' for the part.
Based on the manga series Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro, Alita: Battle Angel is a project Cameron has openly talked about adapting for over a decade. Cameron brought in Robert Rodriguez as director of the film under 20th Century Fox's umbrella, with Cameron producing. THR states however that Fox hasn't greenlit the project officially however, as "budgetary issues are still being worked out."
