20th Century Fox's Deadpool has become the highest-grossing film ever in worldwide box office receipts (not accounting for inflation), according to Box Office Mojo. With $745.7 million and counting, the Ryan Reynolds-led film surpassed 2003's The Matrix Reloaded, which had $742m. This comes despite the film being barred from China, which has become one of the world's largest movie markets.
Although Deadpool has already earned the R-rated crown worldwide, the film is currently third for domestic gross at $349.3m. That domestic record is held by The Passion of the Christ with $370.7m, followed by American Sniper with $350.1m. It looks like Deadpool will surpass Sniper to take sole possession of second place this week, but first place may at be out of its reach.
