With Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman making her cinematic debut in this week's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. has released the first look at Wonder Woman and a group of her fellow Amazons in a new still (via Entertainment Weekly) for 2017's Wonder Woman movie.
The Amazons standing alongside Gal Gadot's Diana are identified as Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nelson), General Antiope (Robin Wright) and Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli). The trio are described as the people "responsible for both raising and training Diana -- the only child on this estrogen heavy isle." EW distinguishes them however with Hippolyta looking to "shelter" Diana from the outside world, while Antiope wants to "prepare her" to face it.
“She is the only child they raised together,” explains director Patty Jenkins. “And their love for her manifests in a different way for each of them.”
The Amazonian warrior wardrobe is intended to be "authentic and real" according to Jenkins, without looking like armor men would wear.
“To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men,” said Jenkins “It should be different. It should be authentic and real—and appealing to women.”
Jenkins worked with The Dark Knight costume designer Lindy Hemming for these costumes, mixing practicality and comic book tropes according to EW -- with high heels being perhaps a controversial choice.
“It’s total wish-fulfillment," Jenkins said, although EW says the Amazons will also have flats for 'heavy fighting.' "I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time—the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”
