After partnering with Marvel to reboot Spider-Man's big screen adventures, Sony now reportedly plans to revive the long dormant Venom solo film on their own. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony plans to develop Venom as a franchise "apart from and unrelated to" the upcoming Spider-Man reboot film co-produced with Marvel Studios. This new Venom project is being produced by the long-time overseers of the Spider-Man movies, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach.
Given the success of 20th Century's Fox's Deadpool, it is not hard to imagine Sony seeing potential for an anti-hero figure - perhaps in an R-rated treatment - in the once highly-popular Venom.
It's not conclusive what, if any, involvement Marvel Studios may have in this new Venom solo film, or whether it may fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but "apart from and unrelated to" seems to suggest a Sony-only production not connected to the MCU.
Spider-Man makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War on May 6.
