Ant-Man & The Wasp director Peyton Reed has tweeted that the film, a sequel to 2015's Ant-Man, will push the boundaries of superhero movies by being rated NC-17.
Breaking: ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is going FULL NC-17. Confirmed.— Peyton Reed (@MrPeytonReed) February 24, 2016
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn responded with an even more intense assertion about another upcoming Marvel film.
@MrPeytonReed I hear The Inhumans is gonna be a snuff film.— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) February 25, 2016
The pair were joking of course, but they seem to have been inspired by the announcement of an R-rated cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice being included on the film's eventual home video release, as well as by the success of the R-rated Deadpool. In another connection to Deadpool, using social media for this kind of meta-commentary on superhero films is a big part of Deadpool's appeal.
Ant-Man & The Wasp - which will presumably not actually be rated NC-17 - is scheduled for a July 6, 2018 release.
