Toy giants Hasbro and Mattel have been in talks for a possible merger, according to Bloomberg Business. Negotiations reportedly began as far back as late 2015, with several further rounds of talk occuring in the subsequent months.
If accurate, a merger would bring toy franchises such as Hasbro's Transformers, G.I. Joe, My Little Pony, and Mattel's Hot Wheels, Barbie, Fisher Price, and Masters of the Universe under one roof. Hasbro also has the license to produce toys based on both Star Wars and Marvel Comics, while Mattel has the license for DC Comics toys.
If a merger were to be formally pursued, it could face intense review by the U.S. government given the implications of it as a possible monopoly in the toy sector.
No details of the possible merger have been revealed, and neither Hasbro nor Mattel could reportedly be reached for comment.
