Updated December 31, 2015 at 4:21 p.m. E.T.: Since the posting of this article, Variety has back-tracked on its confirmation of Coogler as Black Panther's director and deleted their article and tweet.
Looking into The Verge's source of Empire, the article they're referring to does not in fact confirm Coogler's hiring.
Original Story: Creed director Ryan Coogler has been confirmed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige as director of 2018's Black Panther movie, according to Variety and Empire (via The Verge). Coogler has been previously rumored to be in the running for the role, but has apparently now been offered -- and accepted -- a contract.
Black Panther is scheduled to open in theaters July 6, 2018 with Chadwick Boseman in the title role. No other actors have been announced, but in the Empire interview Feige said it would be a "majority black cast."
