James Gunn hamming it up

Earlier today, rumor website Heroic Hollywood began circulating a "scoop" claiming to name Peter Quill's mysterious father, whose identity will likely be revealed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The rumor claimed that "four reputable sources" had identified Kree warrior Mar-Vell, A.K.A. the original Captain Marvel, as Quill's errant father.

Not so, says director James Gunn. Gunn took to Facebook to vehemently deny the Mar-Vell rumor, saying “The rumors surrounding Quill’s parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren’t even close to the truth.”

Gunn's statement went on to question why anyone would want such information before the release of the film, adding “I got in this business because I love movies, and I think most film journalists are the same way. And spoiling plot details doesn’t add to the enjoyment of the film-going experience.” You can read the entirety of Gunn's statement right here:

All right. From this moment on I’m going to stop commenting on any rumors surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,...

Of course, Heroic Hollywood's rumor came with a built in defense against this sort of reaction, as all good conspiracy theories do, saying that as soon as the rumor hit the web, Marvel would likely move to deny its veracity.

As for who Newsarama thinks Quill's father will be, well, we've got our own theory.

We'll all find out the truth when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
