With just under a month to go before its release, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already breaking box office records.
Online ticket retailer Fandango has reportedly confirmed to Variety that advance ticket sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens have topped $50 million, surpassing previous record holder The Hunger Games.
MovieTickets.Com, another online retailer, also reported to the online trade that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has sold more individual advance tickets through their service than any other film they have offered.
Estimates place Star Wars: The Force Awakens's opening weekend box office ahead of Jurassic World's $208.8 million, though no December box office debut has ever topped $100 million. It is likely that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will at least top The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey's December opening record of $85 million.
It is estimated that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will play on at least 4,000 screens. The film opens on December 18.
