According to a Facebook post from his son Brett (via Los Angeles Vintage), George Barris, the designer of the 1960's TV Batmobile, has passed away at the age of 89.

"Sorry to have to post that my father, legendary kustom car king George Barris, has moved to the bigger garage in the sky. He passed on peacefully in his sleep at 2:45 am," said the younger Barris. "He was surrounded by his family in the comfort of his home. He lived his life they way he wanted til the end. He would want everyone celebrate the passion he had for life and for what he created for all to enjoy. Thank you all for the posts and calls, your love is deeply appreciated. Peace."

While Barris was best known as the designer of the '66 Batmobile, he designed many classic television and film automobiles, including Green Hornet's Black Beauty from the '60's TV show, the Munsters' Koach, the jalopy from Beverly Hillbillies, and K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider.

The original '66 Batmobile recently went on auction.
