Marvel's Maggia crime syndicate is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning in the upcoming season of Agent Carter.
The ABC midseason show has cast Ken Marino to play Maggia mob boss Joseph Manfredi (a.k.a. Blackwing in comic books), reports Variety. The Hollywood trade describes Marino's character as a "volatile leader in the Maggia crime syndicate" who works with Peggy Carter's adversaries.
“At Marvel, even our villains need a certain degree of charm as they make life difficult for our heroes," said Marvel's head of television, Jeph Loeb. "Ken brings a quality to Joseph Manfredi that only serves to make him even more menacing, adding another layer of depth to our already outstanding supporting cast.”
In comic books, Joseph Manfredi is better known as Blackwing, son of the the crime lord Silvermane. Originally created by Gerry Conway and Don Heck in 1975's Daredevil #118, has no superhuman abilities but does have an avid fascination with bats, even training mutated bats to do his bidding.
Ken Marino is the latest in a line of actors hired by Agent Carter showrunners Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas from their previous projects, as Marino played a major role in the CW series Reaper. Marino first came to popularity as part of the MTV comedy skit series The State, and has appeared in Party Down, Dawson's Creek, Veronica Mars and Wet Hot American Summer. He recently co-starred in the ABC romantic comedy series Marry Me.
Agent Carter's second season is scheduled to begin in early 2016.
