Last night's episode of Gotham was notable not just for the debut of the all new Firefly, but also because it namedropped a major piece of Batman lore with big implications for future episodes.
It was revealed last night that the Galavans, the new major players turning Gotham upside down, belong to the Dumas family, and are part of the Order of St. Dumas, which Batman fans will recognize as the secret organization of which Azrael - who once replaced Bruce Wayne as Batman- is a member.
But will Azrael himself make an appearance? According to Gotham executive producer John Stevens, yes.
"We will be going deeper into the Order of St. Dumas over the next run of episodes, and it will continue to play an evolving role for the rest of the season," Stephens told ComicBook. "And yes, we wouldn’t be telling an Order of St. Dumas story without also intending to tell an Azrael story. Just keep watching.”
But there's obviously no Batman for Azrael to replace at the moment, so what form will the vigilante take when he hits the small screen? Only time will tell.
Gotham airs Monday nights on Fox.
