Happy New Year!1 of 12Every month Newsarama dives into DC Comics’ solicits to parse out the most important upcoming events in the DC Universe. This month, we’re taking a look at DC’s offerings for January 2016 – and there are some interesting tidbits to be found.
From an event that could kick-off the return of the full-powered Superman, to ominous hints at the Joker’s dreaded comeback, DC Comics looks to be kicking off the new year with a bang. Here are ten things we learned from DC’s January 2016 solicitations!
World's Finest Reunited?2 of 12One of the biggest tenets of Frank Miller’s Dark Knight universe is the strained relationship between Batman and Superman. In The Dark Knight Returns, the old allies finally come to blows in a climactic battle scene.
But the solicit for Dark Knight III: The Master Race #3 hints at the reunion of the World’s Finest, asking if Batman will “turn to help of the Super variety” to face the foe at hand. Could it be a tease? Probably, but Azzarello said at NYCC 2015 that parts of Dark Knight III would make readers “like Superman again.” Maybe this is the start of that turn for the Man of Steel.
Harley's Back... In Arkham3 of 12Harley Quinn got her start as Joker’s psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum before the clown prince of crime preyed on her mind and twisted her into the villain she is today. Now, in Harley Quinn #24, she’s headed back to where it all began.
But more than just returning to Arkham, it seems like Harley is reuniting with someone from her past – someone she’s not eager to see. Someone the solicits describe only as “a certain someone who’s laughing at the end of a dark hallway.” Could it be the Joker? He’s been missing since he and Bruce Wayne appeared to perish in Batman #40.
Joke-man? Bat-ker?4 of 12The long awaited Batman: Europa seems to have plenty of twists in stock as Batman and his nemesis the Joker suffer from a mysterious virus. But in Batman: Europa #4, they’re doing more than suffering together – they’re standing side by side against a greater foe.
Batman has always been the kind of hero who looks for ways to redeem his foes, but is there anything in the Joker worth saving? It looks like Batman may find out here.
Midnighter, Agent of Spyral5 of 12The mysterious Midnighter seems to have a long, adversarial relationship with the equally mysterious Spyral. He’s even gone up against one of their star agents, Dick Grayson. But in Midnighter #8, the DC Universe’s most brutal anti-hero may find himself in an unexpected place – teamed up with Spyral.
Or at least, he will if Spyral has their way. Midnighter has been a team player before, and he’s kind of the ultimate agent of espionage, so it makes sense why they’d want to recruit him. But whether they’ll succeed or not remains to be seen.
James Gordon - This Is Your Life6 of 12Jim Gordon’s been the Batman for less than a year, but already his past is coming back to haunt him. The solicit for Detective Comics #48 teases the return of “a case from Jim’s past” – probably not his past as Batman, but from his career as a detective prior to taking up the cape and cowl.
Still, it looks like the ramifications of Jim’s somewhat trouble past returning may run deep – the solicit says the mystery may “decide the future of Batman.”
Perhaps it's tying into the case Scott Snyder first unveiled in Batman #44? Could be, but then again Gordon's got a very long log of cases.
Home Sweet Home7 of 12While the mystery at the heart of Batman and Robin Eternal is growing by the week, it seems like things are going to become much more personal for the original Robin, Dick Grayson, come January.
The solicits for January’s installments of Batman and Robin Eternal say that the enigmatic Mother would be targeting “a place that couldn’t be more personal for Dick Grayson.” But where could that be? Haly’s Circus, where Dick cut his acrobatic teeth? Or maybe his one-time home of Bludhaven? We’ll find out in January.
Geof Darrow And Frank Miller Reunite For DK38 of 12Geof Darrow is reuniting with his Hard Boiled collaborator Frank Miller to draw the third mini-comic to be packaged in Dark Knight III: The Master Race #3.
While the solicit doesn’t say which character the mini-comic will focus on, it was revealed at NYCC 2015 that Wonder Woman and Flash would each be the focal point of future mini-comics, which will tie into the larger Dark Knight world.
Red Hood/Arsenal/Joker's Daughter9 of 12Ever since Starfire struck out on her own, Red Hood and Arsenal’s partnership has lacked that feminine touch. But all that’s about to change in Red Hood/Arsenal #8 when they team up with Joker’s Daughter.
The solicit for Red Hood/Arsenal #8 says that the duo is bringing in Joker’s Daughter as a new hire for their “rent-a-hero” business. But this isn’t the Duela Dent of old – this is the psychotic new version who wears her “father’s” face. It stands to reason things won’t go as planned.
We Are Joker10 of 12We Are Robin is all about a collective of young people uniting under a legendary name on the streets of Gotham City – but they aren’t the first group in DC lore to do so. Batman Beyond, set in the near future, showed a Gotham City plagued by a gang called the Jokers, who took their queues from Batman’s arch-enemy.
Now, it looks like we’re going to see the origins of the Jokers in We Are Robin #8 - a fitting place for the gang to debut, given the similar nature of the teams. Between the Jokers showing up here, and what’s being teased in Harley Quinn, could Joker himself be far behind?
Not So Super, Superman?11 of 12Starting in January, Superman is squaring off against Vandal Savage for the fate of the Justice League. Spanning through Action Comics #48, Superman #48, and Superman/Wonder Woman #25, “Savage Dawn” shows what happens when a de-powered Superman takes on the DC Universe’s immortal menace.
The solicits for all three books make it clear that Superman is in over his head, desperate for the return of his full powers. Superman/Wonder Woman #25 has Diana entreating the Greek Gods to return his powers, while Superman #48 has Clark going so far as to turn to kryptonite to restore his strength. Could this be the beginning of the return of the fully-powered Superman?
