AMC's The Walking Dead has cast Luck actor Tom Payne in the role of Paul "Jesus" Monroe for the upcoming sixth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Jesus is one of the primary characters currently in The Walking Dead comic book, debuting in #91 as part of the Alexandra Safe-Zone. Payne's Jesus will be recurring in the upcoming season, "with an option" to return in the following season according to THR.
Given that Jesus has been cast and his connections to various storylines from comic books, it is possible The Walking Dead could be on its way to introducing one of the series' most popular big bads, Negan.
"There's a particular story in that arc that I'm very excited for," showrunner Scott M. Gimple told THR. "But because we know where we're going, we have some opportunities to play around with it and put some things in that will lead up to [Negan and Alexandria] in different ways yet fulfill the story Robert told to the Nth degree by utilizing some slightly different approaches. Lineups and timelines and the whole 9 yards."
The new season of The Walking Dead begins October 11 on AMC.
