Variety is reporting that a new live-action Japanese-language Death Note film is in development by Warner Japan and Nippon TV. Based on the best-selling manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, the working title of the new film is Death Note 2016 and will be directed by Gantz's Shinsuke Sato. Details on the story itself are sparse, but it will reportedly concern six different notebooks.
There have been three live-action films based on the Death Note manga: the 2006 original, a sequel titled Death Note: The Last Name and a spin-off, L: Change The World.
According to Variety, this new Death Note film is unrelated to the announced U.S. live-action adaptation by Warner Bros.
