CNN reports that actress Yvonne Craig passed away Monday at the age of 78.
Craig, best known for portraying Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in the 1960s Batman television series, came to Hollywood as a dancer and transitioned into acting after being discovered by director John Ford. Craig made her debut in 1959's The Young Land, and played opposite Elvis Presley in two of his films before transitioning to television.
Craig guest-starred on shows such as My Three Sons and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, and also played the memorale role as an Orion slave girl named Marta in Star Trek's "Whom Gods Destroy."
Craig found her most memorable role however in the 1967 season of Batman, playinng Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. Although the series was cancelled soon after, her TV portrayal heavily influenced subsequent usage of the character in comic books, even being considered as a heavy inspiration for the recent revamp by Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher and Babs Tarr.
