Batman v Superman... v Suicide Squad1 of 12Two of the biggest things to come out of Comic-Con International: San Diego in 2015 are the trailers for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad. With Marvel Studios skipping the con this year, DC was able to swoop in and dominate Hall H with a pair of trailers that left fans’ heads spinning.
Best of all, Warner Bros. managed to pack an untold level of hype into two trailers totaling less than seven minutes of film. And, now that both trailers have been officially released to the public, it’s time Newsarama dove in headfirst and pulled out ten things worth noticing in the Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad trailers.
BvS - Bruce Wayne’s Man Of Steel Connection2 of 12There’s a dramatic shot early in the Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice trailer where Bruce Wayne runs headlong into the destruction cause by a blast of Kryptonian heat vision.
It’s revealed immediately afterwards that the building was Wayne Financial, located in Metropolis. While that fact wasn’t clear in Man Of Steel, the moment actually lines up perfectly with a scene from the earlier film. Check it out.
SS - Deadshot In Civvies3 of 12Next to Harley Quinn, Deadshot is the highest profile member of Task Force X – in fact, in this trailer, he’s the one who nicknames it the "Suicide Squad." He’s also played by, arguably, the film’s biggest star in Will Smith, so it’s no wonder that some close attention is paid to establishing him in the trailer.
But what’s interesting is how much time is spent on what appears to be Deadshot’s backstory. The trailer holds plenty of shots of Floyd Lawton, Deadshot’s alter ego, in some pretty stylish civilian clothes. The presence of the young girl at his side suggests that Deadshot’s estranged family, a major presence in his comic book history, will also play a role in the film.
BvS - Joke’s On You4 of 12Fans have long speculated as to whether Robin would have a role in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, and this trailer reveals that yes, he will… Just not in the way viewers may have expected.
Chalk this Robin costume, on display in what appears to be the Batcave, up as another clue as to why Bruce Wayne shed the mantle of Batman at some point in the film’s distant past. As to what happened to Robin – or which specific Robin this costume belonged to – the “Joke’s on you” graffiti leaves little doubt, at least to the fate of the boy wonder.
SS - Captain Boomerang5 of 12The least likely member of the film version of Task Force X didn’t get much of a spotlight in this trailer, but there’s one good shot of Captain Boomerang interacting with Harley Quinn.
The snarly, gruff Australian seen in this shot is none other than Digger Harkness, one of Flash’s goofiest Rogues. He may not have his arsenal of trick boomerangs in this shot, but he’s at least got the classic blue and white color scheme down pat.
BvS - Come, son of Jor-El! Kneel Before… Luthor?6 of 12What could bring Superman to his knees? Whatever it is, Jesse Eisenberg’s Luthor seems to have the key, judging by this scene where Superman kneels before his arch-nemesis.
Maybe it has something to do with that large chunk of kryptonite, or perhaps some secret uncovered from the corpse of General Zod, which, judging by the trailer, may be in Luthor’s hands.
SS - Belle Reve Penitentiary7 of 12Belle Reve, the headquarters of Task Force X, has often been as much a character in Suicide Squad as the actual team, with the brutal prison, located in Terrebone Parish, Louisiana, clutched tightly in Amanda Waller’s iron grip.
The trailer for Suicide Squad has one long shot of the inside of Bell Reve – or at least, we believe it’s Belle Reve. It’s not mentioned by name, but judging by the context, with Waller saying she “threw them in a hole, and threw away the hole,” and the name “Belle Reve” appearing in the first picture of the cast some months back, all signs point to this being the home of the cinematic Suicide Squad
BvS - Diana Prince8 of 12One of the Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice trailer’s biggest – or at least most fan pleasing – moments, came from the brief snippets of Wonder Woman in action, but did you catch the scene of Wonder Woman in her civilian guise?
It’s unclear whether Wonder Woman will use the pseudonym Diana Prince when she’s out of her costume, but one look at her in that stunning white gown suggests that there will be some depth to her role in the film beyond a cameo in the action.
SS - Is that… Batman?9 of 12In the Suicide Squad trailer, there’s one shot of Batman on top of Joker’s car – but that’s not what we’re talking about here. No, what caught our eye was the group of thugs in ridiculous costumes shooting up a building in some kind of heist.
As for who they are, and who they work for, it’s hard to say. But judging by one of them wearing a not entirely convincing Batman outfit, and the silliness of the rest, our money is on this crew being henchmen of the Joker.
BvS - Aquaman?10 of 12So Jason Momoa’s Aquaman didn’t make a big appearance in the trailer – somewhat surprising, considering the attention the single image of him received months back. But there may still have been some kind of nod, perhaps even a clue as to his whereabouts.
Stuck in the middle of the trailer is this shot of a young boy diving into some water. What he finds there is hard to see, but it looks as though it could be a human form. It’s possible it’s a coincidence, but judging by what appears to be the form’s long hair, this may in fact be a tiny glimpse of Aquaman snuck into the trailer.
SS - Harley Quinn: Secret Origin?11 of 12It’s understandable that Harley Quinn takes center stage for most of the Suicide Squad trailer – she’s the most recognizable member of Task Force X, and one of DC’s most popular characters. But there’s one subtle Harley moment in the trailer that you may have missed – and it could be a doozy.
Towards the trailer’s end, there’s a scene of Harley Quinn – or possibly more accurately, Harleen Quinzel – strapped to a table. Considering the shot touches the Joker’s line “I’m not gonna kill you – I’m just gonna hurt you really, really bad,” this one shot may be a clue that what we’re witnessing is the death of Harleen Quinzel, and the birth of Harley Quinn.
