Cartoon Network’s The Amazing World of Gumball is known for its eclectic nature, and now that spirit is coming to comic books in a new September special.
Published by KaBOOM!, The Amazing World of Gumball 2015 Grab Bag will feature over half dozen prominent cartoonists doing an amalgam of short comics, parody advertisements and activity pages set in and around Gumball Watterson’s world. Series editor Shannon Watters says the diverse “house style” really opens the door for her and KaBOOM! to do something eclectic like this. Contributing to this one-shot anthology will be cartoonists Kate Leth, Zack Giallongo, Fellipe Martins, Nneka Myers, Cohen Edenfield, Philip Murphy and Yehudi Mercado, along with additional writing by Fernanda Jaber.
“The Amazing World of Gumball is really unique in that its ‘house style’ is multimedia, which gives writers and artists a vast arena to play in,” Watters tells Newsarama. “It's really cool to see what everyone's take is and how they translate that style.”
Set for release September 30, The Amazing World of Gumball 2015 Grab Bag is centered around the idea of Gumball and Darwin looking to enhance their trading card collection and find themselves trapped by a collector of collectors such as themselves. Gumball and Darwin aren’t the only Elmore residents pulled in, as Mr. Waterson, Tina Rex and more get pulled in on this 28-page activity book.
“Most people collect something. Some collect comic books, others prefer knock-knock jokes,” says collaborators Feillipe Martins and Fernanda Jaber. “Darwin and Gumball are about to find out that people in Elmore, however, collect things that are far more strange."
Cohen Edenfield is contributing a story for The Amazing World of Gumball 2015 Grab Bag centered on Tina Rex called “Storage Unit.”
“'Storage Unit' is a little story about Tina Rex and nobody else,” Edenfield explains. “Which is how things usually are for Tina, which might not be easy when you're just a kid and have to live in the Junkyard. Maybe things can get a little better, though?"
Recent Sheridan graduate Nneka Myers’ story is about the long-standing battle over the TV remote on Saturday mornings in the Watterson household.
“Anais wants to watch Magical Maiden Jane, while Gumball, Darwin and Richard rather watch Monster Trucks,” Myers says. “However, the help of a 'magical' toy wand will change that."
The Amazing World of Gumball 2015 Grab Bag is scheduled to be released September 30.
