As the DC Universe emerges from the surprising developments of Convergence — where every DC multiverse in history appears to now be in continuity — the big question is: Where will this new, extended "omniverse" first be referenced in a DC comic?
With DC's release this week of an eight-page Justice League United "sneak peek," it looks like the company is providing a possible first tie-in to its new extended structure. A team appears to be assembled specifically to deal with the aftermath of Convergence, with a roster of more than 30 characters (at least for the first mission), some of whom are usually villains.
According to the sneak peek by new series writer Jeff Parker and artist Travel Foreman, the team will now be focusing on "anomalies" that were caused by the "cosmic convergence" — presumably referring to problems caused by the Convergence mini-series. As Stargirl says in the preview, they are "volatile spots that could undermine everything we understand."
Justice League United, which launches a new story in July's #11, had previously focused on a smaller team that included Adam and Alanna Strange, Animal Man, Stargirl and Equinox, a new character introduced by previous JLU writer Jeff Lemire.
Those characters are still part of the story, but the eight-page preview for the new, revamped team shows the following DC characters being recruited to assist in this new mission: Batgirl, Zatanna, Beast Boy, Swamp Thing, Etrigan the Demon, Robotman, Kid Flash, The Atom, Wonder Girl, Sinestro, Brainiac, Vandal Savage, Gorilla Grodd, Lex Luthor, Queen Mera of Atlantis, Deadman and Firestorm.
On the final page of the preview, more characters are shown, including some who haven't been seen in the New 52 for awhile, like Hawk and Dove, Blue Devil, Booster Gold and Phantom Stranger. But it’s the presence of Guy Gardner in his classic GL uniform (when DC has revealed this month he’ll be part of the Green Lantern “Lost Army” stranded in an unknown part of the universe), and Captain Carrot that tips it off that Justice League United will apparently be recruiting members from around the Multiverse. As the sneak peek's intro page explains, the team will assemble "brand new and widly untraditional teams of heroes and villains" and 'crazy team-ups.'
Or as Equinox says, “everybody..."
