Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 and 2 will be the first films shot entirely on IMAX/Arri 2D cameras.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo plan to use the special cameras for certain action sequences in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, but Infinity War will mark the first time an entire feature film has been shot on the cameras, not just for Marvel, but anywhere.
"The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring 10 years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/Arri Digital camera," said the Russos in a statement accompanying the announcement.
The IMAX/Arri camera is designed to capture its subjects in IMAX's special aspect ratio, making them easier to convert to the larger digital IMAX format.
Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 is due out in May 2018, with Part 2 following in May 2019.
