Sunday at Star Wars Celebration the first details of the 2016 Star Wars spin-off (what Disney and Lucasfilm are now calling "Star Wars anthology films") to be directed by Gareth Edwards were revealed.
The official description of Star Wars: Rogue One is "a band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans."
In other words, Rogue One is an Episode IV prequel detailing how the Death Star plans Princess Leia gave to R2-D2 (for delivery to Obi-Wan Kenobi) were obtained.
Felicity Jones will play a Rebel soldier.
“It comes down to a group of individuals who don’t have magical powers that have to somehow bring hope to the galaxy,” was the reply when a fan asked what role the Jedi play in this film.
Edwards said the prequel will be going for "real..."
"This is a real place that we’re really in…The thing that interests me about it, is Star Wars was basically very black and white. Our movie is gray," he said.
Rogue One is scheduled for release December 16, 2016.
The above is concept art revealed at the panel. A short teaser trailer was shown. We'll update later if and when Disney officially releases it.
