Note: Spoilers ahead May 2's Free Comic Book Day title from DC, Divergence.
In case you missed this one (and that was probably hard to do) multiple online sources are reporting that the identity of the all-new, mech-suit-wearing Batman, teased on the cover of June's Batman #41 and revealed in DC's Free Comic Book Day issue Divergence, is none other than Jim Gordon.
Apparently leaked first in scanned Divergence images on lacovacha.mx, this Jim Gordon looks a lot different from the Gotham City Police Department commissioner most readers know. In the story by Batman creators Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, he's wearing a robotic Batman suit, but without his mustache, with a mohawk, and looking like he might be a little bulked up.
Earlier this month in the finale of the weekly series Batman Eternal, Jim Gordon was shown to be jobless, and he joked within the issue about what he might do now that he's no longer commissioner. If the leaked images are accurate, the character has gone through quite a transformation during his time away.
As for the old Batman, Bruce's fate is still unknown, because Batman #40 has been delayed until April 29th. The issue, which serves as the conclusion of the Joker-centric "Endgame" storyline, presumably takes Bruce out of the Batman suit after his battle with the Joker — leaving room for an "all-new" Batman to move in.
In the leaked image, Gordon is telling established GCPD character Maggie Sawyer that he'd "like to go on record as saying this is the dumbest idea in the history of Gotham City." But now that a leak has revealed the idea in its full splendor, many readers and bloggers are wondering — with Snyder and Capullo creating a muscular Jim Gordon wearing a mechanized Batman suit and kicking butt in Gotham City — is Jim Gordon wrong?
Snyder himself has openly questioned the upcoming new status quo, writing dialogue for Gordon that's a paraphrased version of what he said of the development himself - "It could be the worst idea or the best idea I've had. I have no clue."
