Fans of the TV show Gotham have been introduced to several recognizable of the city's villains since the series began only a few months ago. But the one villain that everyone's been scrambling to find in the show's many Easter eggs is Batman's arch-nemesis — the Joker.
One theory about the Joker's appearance on Gotham caught fans' attention recently — a Reddit user's post speculation that the show's Penguin character, played by Robin Lord Taylor, is actually going to morph into the TV show's version of the Joker.
While it's a tempting idea, particularly with the popularity of Taylor's portrayal on the show, the actor just shot the theory down during an interview on MTV. It appears that Taylor isn't aware of any plans to turn the Penguin into the Joker, and hasn't been playing the character in that way.
"I read it, and I was like, 'Huh,'" he explained. "I was like, 'Nah.' But then I was so impressed at the detail that this person went into... the guy who formulated this theory. I was just amazed at the amount of attention that people are paying to the show. I mean, he was looking at the colors of my vest and my suit, and extrapolating off of that."
That said, Taylor admits it's always a possible twist that he just doesn't know about yet. “I find it incredibly unlikely, but at the same time, I have no idea what could happen,” Taylor said. “I get the scripts and I’ll read something, and I will be just as shocked as everyone else is when they see it happen onscreen.”
Before the show began in September, Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller had indicated the Joker would be teased in early episodes, and that there were plans to eventually reveal him. Early fan speculation centered on a comedian who appeared in the first episode, and fans have analyzed various character appearances as possible future versions of the villainous clown.
