James Gunn wanted to kill Stan Lee...
The comic book legend made his trademark Marvel movie cameo in Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy during an early crowd scene on Nova Prime, but in a new interview for the "Q&A With Jeff Goldsmith" podcast, the director revealed he had another idea for Lee's cameo - homicide!
As he previously revealed, one of Gunn's original ideas was to have Lee appear in one of the Collector's cells (Lee's face superimposed on another person's body anyway) giving Groot the finger during the Collector's scene in the middle of the film.
But now newly-revealed was Gunn's idea for what happened to Lee following the Infinity Stone explosion, which liberated Howard the Duck, as revealed in the post-credits scene that made the film's final cut.
"[Stan Lee] wasn't going to be liberated," Gunn reveals. "We were going to murder Stan Lee."
According to director, during the Infinity Stone scene, “we very clearly saw Stan Lee’s box exploding, when the thing explodes. And I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if Stan Lee’s—these are the kind of ideas that I would come up with and Marvel would say I think that’s super James Gunn—but Stan Lee’s head is rolling into frame.’ And anyway, so we didn’t do that.”
