Update: Paramount has given Justin Lin's Star Trek 3 a July 8, 2016 release date. Comic book readers will remember that date was previously reserved by Marvel Studios until they announced Doctor Strange as a November 4 release at their October announcement event .
Original story: Deadline is reporting Monday evening that the Fast & Furious’ Justin Lin has been named at director of Star Trek 3, following the recent exit of original director Roberto Orci.
Lin is available due to another game of franchise musical chairs. He was originally going to direct Jeremy Renner is a follow-up to Universal’s The Bourne Legacy, but that project was put in indefinite hold in favor of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass’s return to the original Bourne franchise.
Star Trek is of course available because J.J. Abrams (who remains as executive producer) left the director's chair to take on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Deadline reports that Universal wanted Lin to return to direct a multi-part finale to the Fast and the Furious series, but the online trade does not know the status of that possibility now that Lin has signed on for Paramount’s Star Trek.
