Mark Millar’s latest creator-owned series that we expect a movie option announcement on within the next week or two has been announced. The writer, who has created his own through line across his various series that he calls “Millarworld,” teams this time with Sean Gordon Murphy on a new series published by Image Comics called Chrononauts. The book was announced on EW.com, and is described as “Apollo 13 meets The Time Machine” by the author.
As such, the story features a pair of time explorers who head out on a four-issue adventure in March 2015 (with two more stories planned). After literally “planting an American flag in the soil the day before even Columbus arrives,” things go “horribly wrong and so we have these two guys stranded in the time-stream, trying to get home, but at the same time at this incredible advantage the people around them don’t have,” Millar said.
The story is meant to be a fun, comedic adventure, rather than the serious science fiction fare currently dominating the market. That’s something that caught Murphy’s eye when he was approached on the project.
”I rarely get to work on a script with comedy, so this entire project has been a real treat. For the sci-fi designs, I created the suits to be a bit retro—like F1 racing suits from the 1960s. It’s a bit more fun and whimsical, and fits the tone of the characters better. A lot of sci-fi tries to reinvent the wheel; for Chrononauts, I went through the last three decades and picked a mix of the coolest stuff that would also feel familiar. That way the readers can focus more on the story and less on the tech.”
Expect more on Chrononauts, like the inevitable movie announcement, soon. Head over to EW for a couple more preview pages.
