While there’s plenty to be excited about for Marvel Comics, and especially Marvel Studios fans today after a detailed Phase 3 plan was laid out, fans of two characters might be a little disappointed.
We’re talking of course about Hulk and Black Widow, who amidst the confirmations and announcements were left wanting. During the Q&A portion of Marvel’s presentation, where Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige answered press questions, he directly addressed both characters.
"[Hulk] is going to appear in many of the movies announced today," Feige said. He noted that actor Mark Ruffalo is “on board” for those movies, as well. It is interesting to not he said "many" and not simply "the Avengers movies," meaning we could see Hulk show up in other films, as well. However, he was much less committal about any stand-alone film. "We’ll see. We’d love to do it."
Black Widow, likewise, “couldn’t be more important as an Avenger, but like Hulk the Avengers films will be the films where they play a primary role,” Feige said. He noted that today’s announcement is “about bringing new characters to the screen.” Similar to what was said about her role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Feige again said her role in the ensemble movie Avengers: Age of Ultron is important and as “a linchpin.”
”[Her role] is very, very big and further develops her character. The plans we have for her through the rest of the Avengers saga are very big and she is a linchpin, in fact, to those films,” Feige told press. “So instead of taking her out there or doing a prequel which we haven’t done yet, we’re continuing the forward momentum of the continuity of the Cinematic Universe, of which Widow is a key part.”
These comments all fall in line with what has been said about the characters in recent years and even months. Actor Mark Ruffalo said back in June that Marvel is “entertaining the idea of [a Hulk Solo movie]. There is some consideration for it.” At the time, he expressed interest in being included in a possible Iron Man 4 - with Captain America: Civil War essentially taking that slot, perhaps we’ll see Hulk backing up Cap in that film? Feige also, as far back as the press tour for Winter Soldier, said that Hulk has a major role in Age of Ultron.
"Part of the fun of Avengers: Age of Ultron was saying, ‘you’ve seen another Iron Man adventure, you see another Thor adventure and another Cap adventure, but we haven’t seen the Green Goliath again. So that was important in the characters you haven’t seen – Hulk being one of them and Hawkeye being one of them – Ultron will make up for it," Feige teased before outright saying, "They have very big parts in Age of Ultron."
Oh yeah, no one was asking about Hawkeye this time around, were they?
