While the new issue of Total Film Magazine doesn’t hit until Friday, the magazine is teasing an interview with James Spader on the coattails of the release of the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer. The actor gave them some tidbits about his villainous robot character.
”In many ways he's a child, this character, because he's a brand new being who's just come to be. And yet, through artificial intelligence, he has an incredible capacity for knowledge. So he's a very powerful, smart child,” Spader said of Ultron. “There's a humorous aspect to him, which is something that drew me in from the very first conversation I had with Joss.”
Writer/director Joss Whedon has had a firm hand in the casting process since he first came on board for the first Avengers film., but it sounds like he didn’t have to recruit too hard for Spader. He later clarified that while childlike and humorous in ways, there’s no question that Ultron is a bd guy.
Ultron takes abrupt turns in scenes. Yes, he is psychopathic. He's really batshit crazy!"
The first trailer features narration by Ultron (as played by Spader), talking about the reasons why the Avengers are ineffectual. He is seen in multiple forms, at times supported by other robots as well as newcomer characters Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
