Update 330pm: Season One's trio of executive producers will become a duo for Season Two, as Greg Weisman confirmed to Newsarama that he is leaving the show after the first season. As announced in the press release earlier today, Simon Kinberg and Dave Filoni will continue to hold the Executive Producer position jointly.
No additional details were given by Weisman or Lucasfilm at this time.
Original Story: Star Wars Rebels has so far only premiered via digital devices and special preview screenings, but the series, the first major multimedia project that Disney’s Lucasfilm is producing, already has a second season order in the books.
Now, this should surprise exactly no one. The series has great buzz, and more importantly, cutting the series short at one season, ending it the year that a new live-action Star Wars film is out, would be a very out-of-character movie for the House of Mouse.
“The global expectations for this series could not have been any higher,” said Disney Channels Worldwide President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh. “And I am proud to say that the team at Lucasfilm has delivered something that has surpassed even that incredibly high bar – artistically and thematically.”
Buried in the release is seeming confirmation of a rumor, though, that Greg Weisman is not returning for the second season. The Executive Producer, along with Simon Kinberg and Dave Filoni, was brought on for the first season and the series’ development. The Gargoyles creator and co-head of Young Justice is not listed in the season two credits.
”The creative team behind the second season of Star Wars Rebels includes Executive Producers Simon Kinberg and Dave Filoni, and Co-Executive Producer and Supervising Writer Henry Gilroy,” the press release says. We’ve reached out to both Weisman and Lucasfilm for further confirmation, and have not yet received a reply.
Star Wars Rebels premieres with a television movie, Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion, on Friday October 3 at 9pm on Disney Channel, and Monday October 6 at 8pm on Disney XD. The series then kicks off on Monday October 13 at its regular time and channel of 9pm on Disney XD.
