The young Bruce Wayne in Gotham has been cast, and it’s Touch star David Mazouz. At 12 years old, he’s right on target for the casting call, as the young Bruce who has only recently lost his parents tries to find his way (and his mission) while Gotham City grows around young police detective James Gordon.
The role puts a lot of pressure on Mazouz - and on the casting director - to provide someone who will grow naturally into a tall, physical action hero type. At the TCA event in January 2014, Fox Chariman Kevin Reilly said that the show will follow Bruce Wayne's journey all the way up until that fateful day that he becomes Batman. "The show will track Bruce from a child (around 12 years old) until he puts on a cape (in the series finale)," Reilly said. In the press release announcing the casting, however, Warner Bros TV was quick to note that the series' main star is James Gordon, who, along with the butler Alfred Pennyworth, will be who Bruce Wayne "relies on for guidance and protection," at least at first.
Mazouz fits the last major piece of the Gotham puzzle, but one more also joins him in new casting Tuesday, as Camren Bicondova, an actress and dancer, joins as Selina Kyle (who will eventually become Catwoman, in the Batman mythos). Described as a “teenage orphan and a skilled street thief who is dangerous when cornered,” she says on her website she’s a “cat lover,” so the young dancer has that step in the right direction for the role. In fact, she frequently tweets and posts pictures and videos with the hashtag “#JustBEaCAT” - elaborate audition ploy, or genuine love for felines?
Gotham received a straight-to-series order from Fox, and will premiere in the 2014-2015 season for the channel. It also stars Ben McKenzie as Gordon, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock, Robin Taylor as Oswald “The Penguin” Cobblepot, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, and Jada Pinkett Smith as mob boss Fish Mooney. Bruno Heller wrote the pilot and will act as Executive Producer/showrunner, alongside director and EP Danny Cannon.
