Update Friday 3:45pm: Marvel Comics has released a few more details this afternoon via a press release. In addition to re-confirming that the former Spider-Woman is now Black Widow, the full line up of the FF was revealed - or at least the core four members, along with the first cover.
Joining the originally announced Sue Storm and Tony Stark are Machine Man and Sam Wilson. The text accompanying the image all seems to hint towards a certain villain's return, too. "The FF - Future Foundation - is all that stands between the Ultimate universe and COMPLETE AND UTTER DOOM!"
The All-New Ultimates will start off facing down the "Serpent Skulls" in Hell's Kitchen. As for Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man? All Marvel is hinting is that it's a villain from Peter's past: "A BIG villain from Peter Parker’s past is alive and well and about to turn New York upside down."
Original Story: The end is the beginning for the Ultimate Universe. As Cataclysm, the current event pitting the Ultimate heroes against the regular Marvel Universe villain Galactus, comes to an end, April will see the launch of new Ultimate titles to give the now fourteen year-old publishing line a boost.
Brian Michael Bendis, one of the founding fathers of the line that was meant to bring the Marvel Comics characters into the modern age with new takes, new allegiances, and origins born out of the genetic age, will be staying with the line, reports The AP's Matt Moore. He'll be writing Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man along with artist David Marquez, continuing the run (and giving a nice nod to one of the classic Spidey titles in the 616 universe, Peter Parker: Spider-Man).
Meanwhile, two other titles will round out the line. Ultimate FF sees Joshua Hale Fialkov stay in the Ultimate U, drawn by Mario Guevara, and giving the Future Foundation the spotlight in the younger universe.
"It's a team of geniuses, four of the smartest people in the Ultimate universe. And we're missing one, and that one happens to be a psychopath," Fialkov said of the new team. He revealed that Tony Stark and Sue Storm make up half of it, but was mum on the other two members. Of course, the "psychopath" part may be a big hint, as that universe's Reed Richards snapped, quite nearly destroying and/or taking over the world, but has recently seen some signs of regret and heroism creep in.
The "good, old kick in the butt," as Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso calls it, for the line will also see newcomer Michel Fiffe and artist Amilcar Pinna join the Ultimate Universe. All-New Ultimates will feature a teenaged team with Miles alongside Kitty Pryde, Bombshell, Cloak and Dagger and someone Moore identifies as Black Widow, but who looks in the Marquez promo art like Ultimate Spider-Woman. Turns out, Marvel confirmed to Newsarama, that's because Jessica will be changing her codename in the series - which doesn't bode well for any current Black Widows running around the Ultimate Universe. Alonso does caution that "dead is dead" in the Ultimate Universe, one of the things that makes it unique from the regular Marvel "616" Universe, and that means there won't be "any miraculous resurrections."
All three series will carry the banner "Ultimate Marvel NOW!"
"They're able to win the day, but at great sacrifice, a sacrifice that is so huge that it changes the entire landscape," Bendis told the AP. "It creates a place that demands a fresh start from everyone who surveys it."
That seems especially the case for Miles Morales, who will take his role as Spider-Man much more seriously in this new age.
"His entire life as a human being has changed," Bendis said.
Ultimate Marvel NOW! sees these three series all launch with a first issue in April, 2014.
