Austen off Action, Shazam Coming

DC Comics has officially confirmed for Newsarama what February and March solicits have suggested, that is Chuck Austen is no longer the writer on Action Comics as of January’s issue #823.

Both February and March’s issues are written by J.D. Finn, and April’s issue, #826 is part one of the three-part storyline, “Lightning Strikes,” by Judd Winick, Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund. The villain in the three-part storyline, well…a quick look at the covers below should give a very strong clue as to his identity.

The storyline teams Superman and Shazam in battling an evil that threatens Metropolis, and serves as a sequel, of sorts, to summer’s First Thunder miniseries, written by Winick and illustrated by Joshua Middleton, which chronicles the first meeting of Superman and Shazam.

“Lightning Strikes” begins in Action Comics #826, continues in Adventures of Superman #639, and concludes in Superman #216. All three issues ship in April.

According to sources at DC, both a new writer for Action Comics, as well as the post Brian Azzarello/Jim Lee Superman creative team will be named soon.
